  • On this day in 1980.  Mount St. Helens, a volcanic peak in south-western Washington erupts.  The eruption kills 57 people and devastates 210 square miles of wilderness, 250 homes, 47 bridges, 15 miles (24 km) of railways, and 185 miles (298 km) of highway were destroyed.  Mount St. Helens is located in the Cascade Range.
  • On this day in 1999.  The Backstreet Boys released their 3rd album “Millennium”.
  • On this day in 1952.  George Strait, American country music singer celebrates his birthday today.  George was born in Poteet, Texas.  In 1971, George Strait enlisted in the US army.  While stationed at Schofield Barracks in Hawaii as part of the 25th infantry division, he began performing with an Army sponsored band called “Rambling Country”.
