- On this day in 1883. The Brooklyn Bridge, linking Brooklyn and Manhattan over the East River opens to traffic. It had taken 14 years to complete. On that first day, a total of 1,800 vehicles and 150,300 people crossed Manhattan and Brooklyn. Emily Warren Roebling was the first to cross the bridge.
- On this day in 1686. Gabriel Daniel Fahrenheit who is best known for inventing the mercury thermometer was born today in 1686. Fahrenheit is also known for developing a temperature scale now named after him. Fahrenheit first filled his thermometers with alcohol before using mercury, which gave better results. He died on the 16th of September 1736.
- On this day in 1945. Priscilla Presley, wife of Elvis Presley celebrates her birthday today. Priscilla was born in Brooklyn, New York. Her father was an Air Force officer, and her family was stationed in Germany when she was a teenager. She met Elvis Presley in 1959, when she was 14. At that time, Elvis was serving in the U.S. Armed Forces. They began a romance, and Priscilla eventually followed Elvis to the United States.
