- On this day in 1908. Ian Fleming the author of the ‘James Bond’ spy novels was born. Ian Lancaster Fleming was born in Mayfair, London. Fleming wrote 12 novels and 9 short stories featuring James Bond, secret agent 007, and is also known for writing the children’s novel, Chitty Chitty Bang Bang. Fleming died of a heart attack in Canterbury, Kent on the 12th of August 1964.

- On this day in 1968. Kylie Minogue, Australian singer, recording artist, songwriter was born today. Kylie was born in Melbourne, Australia.

On this day in 1937, the government of Germany–then under the control of Adolf Hitler of the National Socialist (Nazi) Party–forms a new state-owned automobile company, then known as Gesellschaft zur Vorbereitung des Deutschen Volkswagens mbH. Later that year, it was renamed simply Volkswagenwerk, or “The People’s Car Company.” The Beetle was born!
