  • On this day in 1825.  Tasmania (Van Diemen’s Land), Australia, officially separates from New South Wales.  Tasmania was first discovered by Abel Tasman on 24 November 1642, he named it ‘Antony Van Diemen’s Land’.
  • On this day in 1982.  Graceland opened to the public for the first time, almost 5 years after the death of Elvis Presley.  Graceland is a large white-columned mansion and 13.8 acre estate that was home to Elvis Presley in Memphis, Tennessee.  Elvis Presley died at the estate on August 16, 1977. Presley, his parents Gladys and Vernon Presley and his grandmother are buried there in what is called the Meditation Garden.  A memorial gravestone for Presley’s stillborn twin brother, Jesse Garon, is also at the site.
  • On this day in 1775.  The United Colonies changed their name to the United States.
