- On this day in 1886. At least 153 die as Mt Tarawera in New Zealand erupts. Mount Tarawera is a volcanic mountain situated 24 kilometres southeast of Rotorua in the North Island of New Zealand.
- On this day in 1935. Alcoholics Anonymous was formed. In New York City, two recovering alcoholics,William G. Wilson and Dr. Robert Smith, found Alcoholics Anonymous (A.A.), a 12-step rehabilitation program that eventually helps countless people cope with alcoholism.
- On this day in 1752. Benjamin Franklin flies a kite during a thunderstorm and collects a charge in a Leyden jar when the kite is struck by lightning.
- On this day in 1921. Prince Philip, celebrates his birthday today. Duke of Edinburgh (born Prince Philip of Greece and Denmark) is the husband of Queen Elizabeth II.
