Add Your Piece of History… 13th June

  • On this day in 1923.  Australia sees the introduction of Vegemite.  Vegemite is the registered brand name for a dark brown, salty food paste made from yeast extract, mainly used as a spread on sandwiches and toast.  The iconic Australian spread was first developed in 1922.  A trade name competition was held to find a name for the new product, and the winning name of Vegemite was chosen from the entries by being picked at random out of a hat.
  • On this day in 1990.  Official demolition of the Berlin Wall begins.  The Berlin Wall stood as a symbol of the Cold War for nearly 30 years.  It was originally erected overnight on the 13 August 1961, when the Eastern and Western halves of Berlin were separated by barbed wire fences up to 1.83 metres high.  The barbed wire was gradually replace with permanent concrete blocks, reaching up to 3.6m high.  The wall included over 300 watchtowers, 106km of concrete and 66.5km of wire fencing.
  • On this day in 1981.  At a parade in London a teenager fired 6 blank shots at Queen Elizabeth II.  Marcus Simon Sarjeant  joined the crowds for Trooping the Colour, standing  near the junction between The Mall and Horseguards Avenue. When the Queen came past riding her 19-year-old horse Burmese, Sarjeant quickly fired six shots from his revolver.  The horse was momentarily startled but the Queen brought her under control, both Queen and horse were unharmed.

you know Emma, we are separated by, I think, 14 hours…as you, in Queensland, are ahead of me by almost half a day…so as I write on this post, it is still Wednesday the 12th…but tomorrow, the 13th will be the feast day of St Anthony of Padua—or Santo Antonio di Padova….I’ll have a little tribute tomorrow morning…your late afternoon—crazy isn’t it 🙂 I was fortunate to visit Berlin this past Fall—the Wall, or its remnants, was particularly moving—I did a post about that a while back…pretty amazing seeing something that was once so divisive…..always, thank you for sharing…..also…Way to Go to The Queen—not much ever seems to rattle her—thank goodness!!

I love the bit about Vegemite. I grew up on it but it is not the same anymore. It changed since it got taken over by Kraft in America.
