- On this day in 1864. Alois Alzheimer, the man who first identifies the symptoms of Alzheimer’s disease, is born. Aloysius “Alois” Alzheimer was born in Marktbreit, Bavaria. He was a German psychiatrist and neuropathologist.
- On this day in 1940. Paris falls as German troops enter the city and hoist the Swastika on the Eiffel Tower. The Nazi invasion of France began on the 12th of May 1940.
- On this day in 1775. The United States Army was founded.
- On this day in 1942. Anne Frank begins to keep a diary. On June 12, 1942, Anne Frank received a small red and white diary as a present for her 13th birthday. The diary, which she named Kitty, was her companion for just over two years. Frank’s last entry in the diary was dated August 1, 1944. Her family’s secret hiding place was raided three days later, on August 4. She died of typhus in the Bergen-Belsen concentration camp in February or March of 1945.

On June 14, 1967 NASA launched its Mariner 5 spacecraft from Cape Canaveral to Venus. Its mission was to measure interplanetary and Venusian magnetic fields, charged particles, plasmas, radio refractivity and UV emissions of the Venusian atmosphere. It arrived at Venus on Oct 19 of the same year.
