- On this day in 1215. King John of England puts his seal to the Magna Carta. The Magna Carta, Latin for “Great Charter”, set down rights that became part of English law. These rights are now the foundation of the constitution of every English speaking nation, and included the right of a jury trial, protection of private property, limits on taxation and certain religious freedom.
- On this day in 1956. Sixteen year old John Lennon of the music group The Quarrymen met 14 year old Paul McCartney and invited him to join the group. In a few years, the group became The Beatles.
- On this day in 1965. Bob Dylan records “Like a Rolling Stone”.
- On this day in 1667. The first fully documented human blood transfusion was administered by Dr. Jean-Baptiste Denys. He transfused the blood of a sheep into a 15-year old boy, who recovered. Denys performed another transfusion into a labourer, who also survived. Both instances were likely due to the small amount of blood that was actually transfused into these people. This allowed them to withstand the allergic reaction.
