- On this day in 1983. America launches its first woman into space. Sally Ride, born 26 May 1951, was America’s first woman in space. Ride joined NASA in 1978 as part of the first astronaut class to accept women. On this day in 1983 she became the first American woman in space as a crew member on Space Shuttle Challenger for STS-7. As flight engineer for the space shuttle Challenger flight, Sally’s main duties were to monitor the controls and ensure smooth ascent and descent. Sally successfully returned to Earth 6 days later on the 24th of June.
- On this day in 1942. Paul McCartney celebrates his birthday today. McCartney was born in Liverpool, England. McCartney, along with John Lennon, was one of the singers and writers of the Beatles’ songs.
- On this day in 1817. London’s Waterloo Bridge opened. The bridge, designed by John Rennie, was built over the River Thames.
