- On this day in 1984. A 760-year-old wing of York Minster, the largest medieval cathedral in Britain, was gutted by a fierce fire started by lightning. A rescue party saved most of the historic and valuable artefacts from the burning cathedral including tapestries and silver
candlesticks.
- On this day in 1982. 30-year-old Michael Fagan broke into Buckingham Palace and spent 10 minutes talking with Queen Elizabeth II in her bedroom before being arrested inside the palace at 3 am. Major questions were asked on how he evaded 43 soldiers, 24 police, 350 palace staff members, dog patrols, surveillance cameras, electronic listening devices and other equipment.
- On this day in 1877. The first Wimbledon tennis tournament begins.

I went to York Minster when I was in York not long ago, they have a HUGE wall of stained glass windows at one end they are in the process of restoring. Even though you couldn’t see the actual windows they have pictures and stories on computer screens set up inside the cathedral for you to look at, it sounds like a massive undertaking.
Wow, I can’t wait to see those photos Mum! It looks like an absolute amazing beautiful building. Awww all this history is making me go all jelly like!
To talk with the Queen at 3AM–wow….I’d forgotten that little breach….wonder if she had bag on arm… no doubt 🙂 An amazing woman to say the least…they’re not making world leaders like they use to sadly….
