- On this day in 1099. Christian
soldiers enter Jerusalem after a siege during the First Crusade, and murder almost every inhabitant of the city. The First Crusade was launched in 1095 by Pople Urban II to regain control of the city of Jerusalem and the Holy Land from Muslims, and to help the Byzantine Empire fight the Seljuk Turks. (The term “Crusader” was not used until the twelfth century).
- On this day in 1944. Nelson Mandela marries Evelyn Mase. Mandela’s first marriage was to Evelyn Ntoko Mase who, like Mandela, was also from what later became the Transkei area of South Africa, although they actually met in Johannesburg. The couple broke up in 1957 after 13 years of marriage.

after that first “crusade”—it’s been a bit down hill for all or us in the area of relationships I fear….never seeming to be any give or take—it’s all or none, I fear…..
