- On this day in 1969. The Apollo 11 is launched from Cape Kennedy, Florida, the first mission to successfully land a man on the moon. The Apollo 11 was the 5th manned mission in the Apollo program, the 3rd human voyage to the moon and the first attempt to land man on the moon. The launch occurred at 1332 GMT and 12 minutes later Apollo 11 went into orbit around the Earth. The crew consisted of astronauts Neil Armstrong, Michael Collins and Edwin “Buzz” Aldrin. The primary purpose of the mission was to fulfil President John F Kennedy’s goal of “landing a man on the moon and returning him safely to the Earth” by the end of the 1960’s. Man first set foot on the moon 5 days later, on 21st July 1969.

On this day in 1999. John F. Kennedy Jr, his wife, Carolyn Bessette Kennedy and her sister, Lauren Bessette, die when the single-engine plane that Kennedy was piloting crashes into the Atlantic Ocean near Martha’s Vineyard, Massachusetts.
